A new treatment for erectile dysfunction is expected to help men in New Zealand get the boost they need to keep their sex life in check, say doctors.
It will be the first of a new treatment that will help those who are suffering from erectile dysfunction and to improve their sexual performance in New Zealand.
The erectile dysfunction drug called Sildenafil is sold under the brand name Viagra but is only available in Australia and New Zealand.
It is only available to men who have been prescribed the drug on an "as is".
"We are hoping to increase the number of men who have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction by the year 2026," said Dr Chris Mather, chairman of urology at the University of New South Wales's department of urology. "The first and most important benefit of this treatment is the increased effectiveness of the drug."
Sildenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor that works by increasing blood flow to the penis which helps men with erectile dysfunction. It increases blood flow and sexual stimulation to help a man get and keep an erection.
It also helps men who have diabetes who have failed to get enough blood flow into the penis but have failed to respond to stress and anxiety.
The drug is also used to treat the problem of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and to improve the flow of urine to the penis.
"This is a very serious problem, and there's no way of telling how long the problem will be for, of, or to continue," said Mather.
In Australia, men who use the erectile dysfunction drug will have a three-year prescription from their GP to get a prescription for Sildenafil, which is available for sale on prescription only. A prescription for Sildenafil is not required by New Zealand but is covered by most pharmacies.
The most common side effects of Sildenafil are headache, flushing, nasal congestion and indigestion. A doctor will usually order a second prescription and the first one from a pharmacist.
Other side effects that usually go away on their own include back pain, muscle aches, muscle weakness and blurred vision. If they stop, they should be taken on their own, said Dr Mather.
Dr Mather added: "It's important to note that Sildenafil is only used for erectile dysfunction and doesn't affect other drugs in the same group of drugs as Viagra, for example.
"If you're using Viagra and you don't have an erection for sex, there are many other drugs that have been available and are available over the counter.
"It is always important to speak to your doctor about any changes you're experiencing and to tell them you're taking this medicine if you have a problem with your prostate or a condition affecting your urethra or any other part of your body, such as if you've had a heart attack, are on dialysis or if you've ever had a stroke. If you have any concerns about the drug, contact your GP."
Sildenafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which makes it easier to get and keep an erection. It is available in the UK and the US for over five years and is the first treatment for erectile dysfunction.
This treatment will be the only treatment for patients who are experiencing erectile dysfunction and can take this medication only as prescribed. It can only be given to men who have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction and have been prescribed the drug by their GP.
"There are many other drugs, including Viagra, which have had their use under the guidance of their manufacturers and the instructions for their use have been made and the drug is still being used in New Zealand," said Mather.
The drug is not approved for the treatment of BPH and is not intended for use in women. The drug has also not been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for use in children.
But Mather added: "There are lots of reasons why it could help men who have a medical condition that's affecting their sexual function."
The new drug is expected to start on pharmacy shelves in the fourth quarter of 2026.Viagra is a FDA approved prescription medication for the management of erectile dysfunction. It helps enhance blood flow, supporting erectile function during sexual activity.
